Applied Archaeological Research, Inc.’s staff has expertise in cultural resource management, archaeological monitoring, prehistoric and historical archaeology, archaeogeophysical remote sensing, historic preservation, architectural surveys, and artifact identification, analysis, and preservation.  The staff is comprised of highly skilled and trained professionals, the majority of whom meet or exceed the professional qualifications prescribed by the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines.

Bill R. Roulette, M.A., RPA - President and Principal Investigator
Bill has been a professional archaeologist since 1984.  Prior to founding AAR in 1996, he was a project-level archaeologist for cultural resource management companies in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Oregon.  He has conducted, supervised, or managed hundreds of archaeological projects.  Bill is thoroughly versed in the history and prehistory of the Pacific Northwest and has extensive experience in all phases of archaeological research and fieldwork.  He is knowledgeable of federal, state, and local cultural resource ordinances and has had formal training in Section 106 compliance.

Aimee A. Finley, M.S. - Projects Manager / Historic Preservationist
Aimee has been a professional archaeologist since 1993 and a professional Historic Preservationist since 1999.  As Projects Manager, she oversees all logistical concerns and the day-to-day management of projects.  Aimee is an expert in identification, description, and assessment of above ground cultural resources and is well versed in the National Register of Historic Places evaluation and nomination process, federal and state cultural resource compliance law, cultural resource planning, architectural history, architectural photography, and building documentation.  She has completed numerous architectural surveys, written preservation plans, conducted extensive historical research, and developed historic contexts.

Kendal McDonald, M.A. - Office Manager/Project Archaeologist
Kendal oversees all day-to-day management of the AAR, Inc. offices. In addition, she specializes in archaeogeophysics. Since 1999, Kendal has conducted numerous magnetic surveys for prehistoric and historical villages and homesteads, forts, battlefields, Civilian Conservation Corps sites, and cemeteries. Her archeogeophysical work has been conducted throughout Oregon and Washington, and in Texas and Ireland. Kendal lectures on magnetometry and has presented papers at regional and national conferences. She also has a graduate certificate in GIS.

Tom Becker, M.A., RPA - Project Archaeologist
Tom worked on his first archaeolgy project in Israel in 1993 through Linfield College and has been a professional archaeologist since 1996. He received his M.A. from Portland State University in 2004 with a focus on Oregon Coast shell midden sites. Tom has primarily worked throughout the Pacific Northwest, but has also worked in Israel, Nicaragua, Ghana, and Suriname. He has lead all phases of work, including large scale survey and test excavations for transmissinon line, pipeline, and hydroelectric relicensing projects. He has training in NEPA and Section 106 compliance, including writing Management Plans, and is currently managing the cultural resources for the Columbia River Crossing Project. He is also HAZMAT certified.

Jessica Hale, M.S. - Project Archaeologist
Jess has been an archaeologist since 2003. She has led or participated in cultural resource survey, testing, monitoring, and data recovery projects in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California. She specializes in the identification and interpretation historic-era material culture. She has a particular interest in archaeometry and her master’s thesis research used Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) to identify chemical signatures for ceramic wares from some of Britain’s largest historic-era potteries. Her work in this area represents an important contribution to historical archaeology and is due to be published. Additionally, Jessica is skilled in primary document research and in all phase of archaeological fieldwork.
Lucy Harris
Lucy Harris, M.S. (PhD – Pending) - Project Archaeologist
Lucy has been an archaeologist since 2000.  She has led or participated in cultural resource survey, testing, monitoring, and data recovery projects in Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, British Columbia, Canada, Japan, and the Near East.  She specializes in lithic analysis and has a particular interest in Plateau archaeology and archaeological methds. Her PhD dissertation focuses on the developmental history of large complex hunter-gatherer villages on the Interior Plateau of British Columbia.  She expects to complete her PhD program Fall 2011 from the University of Toronto.

Krey Easton, B.A. - Assistant Archaeologist
Krey has worked in CRM for over ten years.  His primary interest is the identification and interpretation of animal remains from archaeological sites.  He is well versed in the identification of prehistoric as well as historic fish and mammal bones from the Pacific Northwest and has been involved in large-scale analysis from the region.  He has worked primarily in the Pacific Northwest with extended stays in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.  Krey is experienced in all levels of fieldwork and has expertise in lithics, bone, and geologic processes as they relate to archaeology.

Melissa Lehman, B.A. - Assistant Archaeologist
Melissa has been an archaeologist since 2001.  She has worked in Texas and the Pacific Northwest.  She produces artifact illustrations for AAR, Inc.  Other specialties: Field mapping, lithic identification, and soil description.

Rob McCurdy, B.S. - Assistant Archaeologist
Rob has been a field archaeologist since 2006. He has worked throughout Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. His specialties are field mapping, soil description, and lithic analysis. He is well-versed in the standard techniques of archaeological excavation. He is HAZMAT certified. Additionally, Rob is the equipment manager.
